The LADY POWER playlist by Sierra features women like Blu Cantrell, Mis-Teeq, En Vogue, and more. Below are the motivations behind this amazing playlist that really paint the picture of why femme empowerment is so important.
There’s an inexplicable blessing and curse to being a woman. On one hand, you are life. You are beauty and grace - warm butter and brown sugar on sweet potatoes - soul, a church. You are a safe haven. When the world seems like it is crashing in, you are the stable piece keeping it all together. You are love and light. You are a walking paradox, making the utterly impossible possible simply by being. Womanhood is magnificent and powerful, daunting yet elegant. You are all of this, but it all seems absurd when you walk out into the world - for me at least. With being a woman comes an incredible awareness of self and other at all times. You are balancing your powerful level of agency, showing this off in how you dress, how you speak, your sexual orientation, everything, while constantly having to be aware of your very existence being viewed as a threat by some - something one may desire to dominate, suppress, and erase from your memory.
I recently had an experience with a guy (as of today, it has been multiple experiences in the course of 3 weeks) that made me question (and at times forget) my power. In the original submission of this piece I stated, “I dropped him and am not looking back! This is freedom to me - being able to say "F it" and do my own thing and stand in my own truth.” All of this is true. I did drop the guy and technically never picked up the others, but what all of these experiences has left me with is a deeper level of self-awareness and incredible rage. I wish the rage wasn’t there, but it is. It is my reality. I will use this as fuel and further myself in creating content for women. The uplifting of women is so important to me. I have been blessed enough to have a beautiful tribe of women who have supported me, advised me, and loved me enough to make sure I always acknowledge my worth. I want this playlist to be dedicated to all the lady folk out there who need a little reminder of their beauty and grace or just an affirmation! I have made this playlist a collaborative playlist and wish for all of you to add your own songs that help remind you of your power. Please only add songs written/performed by women and other lady folk, as this is a space for us and by us! Also please do not delete any songs added by others to this playlist, this playlist serves to create a web of stories through song from women across the world. Play on shuffle because after-all our experiences are like rollercoasters and all those emotions are beautiful, valid, and make us unique!"
